Abba Lichtenstein, P.E., Dr. Eng (hc), Director of Canals & Bridges
Mr. Lichtenstein is the former President of A.G. Lichtenstein & Associates (AGLAS) a consulting firm that he founded in 1963. The company specialized in design and evaluation of bridges, aqueducts and canal locks. In 1986, Mr. Lichtenstein turned the ownership of the firm over to the Associates, and started his own one man consulting firm specializing in historic structures.
He became associated with McMullan & Associates, Inc. in 1994 as a Senior Bridge Engineer / Canal Specialist and in 2006 accepted the position of Director of Canals & Bridges with the firm.
Mr. Lichtenstein has more than 45 years of experience in the design, inspection, and rating of bridges and waterfront structures. He helped develop national standards for the inspection and rating of all types of bridges. He was principal investigator for the research that resulted in the AASHTO Manual for Condition Evaluation of Highway Bridges and the NCHRP Publication of a manual for rating bridges through load testing.
Mr. Lichtenstein is a registered professional engineer in Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and 6 other States.
He is a Civil Engineering graduate of Ohio State University, which has granted him an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Engineering. He is a member of numerous professional organizations and is an honorary member of the ASCE where he received the History and Heritage Award. In 1988, he was accorded the Presidential Award for his work on the Roebling Aqueduct.
