Saranath Weerakoon, PhD, PE, Associate Principal
During his nearly three decades of experience in the industry, Saranath has managed critical engineering efforts for a variety of structures ranging from commercial, industrial, residential, religious, K-12 / higher education, recreation, to many federal government facilities. Among the government clients he serves include the National Institute of Standards and Technology, NAVFAC, the Smithsonian Institution and GSA.
During his collegiate years, fascinated with the marvel of mathematical applications to real life situations, he developed a keen interest in structural engineering, subsequently pursuing and earning a Ph.D. in structural engineering from the North Carolina State University. His strength in analytical methods and design helped him in evaluating both new and existing buildings involving structural complexities, giving ample freedom for architects to express their vision through the structures.
Saranath also enjoys sharing his expertise, insight and technical knowledge with architectural graduate students at area Universities. A personal favorite was serving as critic and providing commentary for the Integrated Design Studio Workshop’s new IEE (Institute for Ecological Economics) facility design at University of Maryland College Park. His critique was said to be energizing and engaging, and was summed up in three words as the “Best. Review. Ever.”
