Today, we’re excited to share news that our latest community project was featured and is now streaming as one of WETA’s Around Town vignettes.
It’s a special edition that can be viewed here: WETA Around Town | Streaming Edition: Buoyant Force and is set to broadcast on WETA over the next two months. Presented by Robert Aubry Davis with Janis Goodman and Peter Winant, this showcase focuses on the GRACE: Buoyant Force sculpture installation in Reston Town Center.
As part of our at-large community pro-bono work, McMullan provided structural engineering services for the design, fabrication, and construction/installation of this 50-foot steel sculpture in the Reston Town Square Park of Reston Town Center. The sculpture, titled Buoyant Force, is designed by artist Sue Wrbican who was inspired by the paintings of American Surrealist Kay Sage. Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) calls the sculpture an “unprecedented project that will not only bring a monumental sculpture in Reston, but will be an act of creative place-making.” Wrbican is an associate professor and director of photographer at George Mason University’s School of Art. Her work, which is known for depicting scaffolded structures and furled fabric in desolate landscapes, is inspired by Sage, who GRACE says lived in the shadow of her husband, the surrealist Yves Tanguy. Construction of this sculpture was achieved after a months-long crowdfunding effort.
