We are thankful... for our whole team at McMullan (a message from Principals Colleen Nasta, PE and Doug Bond, PE, SE)
In addition to taking time this past week to express gratitude for our clients and teaming partners, we want to thank each member of the McMullan team. While 2020 presented us all with unique challenges, everyone at McMullan has come together in support of one another and our project commitments. We remain in awe of how quickly everyone here pivoted to work remotely and visit project sites when needed without missing a step. Moments such as these test a firm's culture and resilience to thrive. We know current circumstances are testing us all once more, yet we applaud the creativity, tenacity, and determination of the McMullan Team to remain focused and committed with good will, humor, and the spirit of overcoming anything together.
Thank you all, and Happy Thanksgiving to you and those you hold near and dear,
McMullan Principals Colleen Nasta, PE and Doug Bond, PE, SE

We are thankful... Immanuel Christian School High School Conversion Phase 1 Completion
The final project showcase in our “We are thankful… ” series celebrates completion of the first phase in converting a five-story office building into a state-of-the-art high school for Immanuel Christian School.
Located in Fairfax County and designed by Cooper Carry, this project comprises a total building area of 36,000 SF that is being converted in two phases to meet the programming needs for this private school, enabling them to expand their current K-8th grade offerings to a full, K-12th grade education.
This first phase included redesign and renovation of the lobby level as well as the second and third levels. Fireproofing was also part of the project scope for all four levels with McMullan providing structural engineering for upgrades to support future MEP equipment, a greenhouse and observatory on top of the existing roof, and associated extensions for the second stair and elevator.
One of the unique features designed in this first phase was the Learning Stair shown here which groups its space into a two-story learning community for a common instructional area with an interconnecting stair. Scott-Long Construction, Inc. was the general contractor, and the project team is now in the process of designing for the second phase.
As noted by Cushman & Wakefield Director Jon Mahaffey whilst representing the school, “Immanuel Christian School’s ultimate goal is to acquire the building as its long-term home. This is a great example of a trend we’re seeing across suburban DC’s office market – older office buildings being converted to alternative uses, in this case a school. It’s a perfect adaptive reuse that’s both sustainable and benefits the surrounding community.”

We are thankful... Conococheague Creek Aqueduct Restoration Garners National Industry Award
This year, the Conococheague Creek Aqueduct Restoration received not one, but two industry awards — one of which was recently presented at the ACI Virtual Concrete Convention on October 26 for First Place - Repair and Restoration . So, it is only fitting that we add this project and its awards as things we are celebrating this year as part of our “We are thankful… ” series.
The aqueduct, a McMullan project with Peck, Peck & Associates, underwent a 30-month restoration with the National Park Service-National Capital Region. The Conococheague Aqueduct is not just the only aqueduct along the C&O Canal to carry water, but also the only place anywhere in North America where visitors can ride a boat across an historic aqueduct and through a working lock. The ribbon cutting ceremony to mark completion of its restoration was held in August 2019. It was also featured in an issue of World Wide Waterways shortly thereafter.
As noted during the 2020 ACI Virtual Concrete Convention, “The historic Conococheague Aqueduct on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal in Williamsport, MD, was restored using a combination of historic and modern materials and methods. This water-filled, three-arch bridge carried canal boats over the Conococheague Creek from 1835 to 1924. One of the aqueduct’s stone walls was replaced with a timber wall with outriggers in 1920, after a canal boat broke through and fell to the creek below, and the repair served until the aqueduct was permanently closed after two floods in 1924. The modern restoration included repairs to the existing stonework, construction of a concrete channel, and installation of timber outriggers to replicate the bridge’s 1920s appearance. With the construction of a canal turning basin and restoration of water in the aqueduct, the repair and restoration project now allows visitors to ride a boat across the historic Conococheague Aqueduct and through a working canal lock.”
Key to this project’s success was Corman Kokosing, who served as both the general contractor and concrete contractor, as well as Thomas, Bennett & Hunter, Inc., the concrete supplier.
On behalf of the entire project team, we also want to extend a special thank you to the ACI Maryland Chapter for nominating our project in the 2020 ACI Excellence Awards. Plus, we are equally excited to see this project featured in the 2021 ACI Calendar.
