We are thankful... National Park Service Nationwide IDIQ A/E General Engineering

Earlier this year, McMullan, with our joint venture partner that is now formally known as Sorba Engineering, was awarded one of the National Park Service Nationwide IDIQs A/E General Engineering, Small Business Pool.

As we shared on Wednesday, for nearly 31 years, McMullan has collaborated with many teaming partners and the National Park Service on various projects throughout the United States. With this contract and as the managing partner of MWM JV2, LLC, McMullan will serve as prime to provide general engineering and supporting services for a variety of projects within areas of national significance at locations throughout the continental United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, its territories and possessions (Guam, Northern Marina Islands, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa).

Projects may include, but are not limited to planning, development of design and construction plans, construction specifications and construction cost estimates, operation and maintenance plans, and construction observation, as well as research, evaluation, analysis, strategic planning, inventory and monitoring, compliance and permitting (including environmental, construction, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) - Section 106) for various real property/historic assets and sites under the purview of National Park Service.

Prior to award of this contract, McMullan had served as the structural engineering subconsultant on 12 National Park Service IDIQs (multiple regions) through which more than 85 separate task orders had been awarded/completed. In addition, McMullan had been awarded 11 standalone projects under direct contract with National Park Service.

It is worth noting that our additional government agency clients include, but are not limited to: GSA (multiple regions and nationwide); USDA-U.S. Forest Service, Southern Region; USDA National Arboretum; NIST; Smithsonian Institution; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; NAVFAC Washington; Augusta Canal Authority in Georgia; Montgomery County Department of Parks; M-NCPPC; Fauquier County Parks & Recreation Department; Loudoun County Parks, Recreation & Community Services; Loudoun County DOT; Arlington County Parks & Recreation; City of Lockport; Borough of Wharton; New York State – OPRHP; and Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. We are thankful... SE 2050 Commitment

Continuing our “We are thankful… ” series, we are excited to share that Earth Day 2021 marked the occasion of when McMullan officially joined the SE 2050 Commitment in response to the SE 2050 Challenge which states: “All structural engineers shall understand, reduce and ultimately eliminate embodied carbon in their projects by 2050.”

Since the early days of our firm and driven by Founding Principal Denis McMullan’s personal commitment, McMullan has always sought to provide structural engineering solutions that utilize the maximum use of recovered and in-place structural materials.

Our diverse and extensive experience includes facility designs that make maximum use of recovered structural materials with high regional material content. Furthermore, our specifications for concrete, steel, and masonry are tailored to require use of high recycled content material and give preference to wood products made from forests certified by an FSC-accredited certification body.

Today, most McMullan projects are compliant with LEED guidelines for certification as well as prevailing green building design and construction codes, including those for new buildings, alterations/additions, renovations, rehabilitations, deteriorated concrete structure repairs, and adaptive reuses of structures.

Our commitment to SE 2050 extends to all client markets we serve. This includes federal to municipal agencies, public K-12 school systems, independent schools, institutions of higher learning, hospitals and healthcare systems, private and commercial developers/building owners, historic societies, nonprofits, and more. Plus, McMullan has spearheaded structural engineering designs for net zero energy buildings, such as DPR Construction’s Mid-Atlantic Headquarters shown above.

We are thankful... Conococheague Aqueduct Rehabilitation Industry Recognition

For the second showcase in our “We are thankful… ” series, we want to celebrate our Conococheague Aqueduct Rehabilitation project for National Park Service which garnered Structural Engineers Association - Metropolitan Washington’s (SEA-MW) recognition for Outstanding Specialized (Non-building) Structure during their annual awards event this summer.

For nearly 31 years, McMullan has collaborated with many teaming partners and the National Park Service on various projects throughout the United States. For this effort, McMullan’s project management and engineering team comprised Principals Douglas E. Bond, PE, SE and Denis McMullan, PE with Project Structural Engineer Rebecca Biskaduros, PE. Other teaming partners included Peck, Peck & Associates, JMT, and Corman Kokosing.

In addition, this project has also garnered two additional industry recognitions, one of which is a national award. The national award is ACI’s Excellence Awards First Place - Repair and Restoration. The other is from the Maryland Chapter ACI Excellence in Concrete Award.

We are thankful... Flint Hill Peterson Middle School Collaboration & Industry Recognition

To kick off McMullan’s “We are thankful… ” series to honor and celebrate our collaborations with amazing clients and teaming partners, near and far, we thought it best to start with the Flint Hill Peterson Middle School which officially opened for the 2020-2021 school year. Even more exciting is having this project receive a Jurors' Citation in Institutional Architecture as part of AIA Northern Virginia’s Design Awards 2021. Our structural engineering services were provided in collaboration with Bowie Gridley Architects and other design team consultants for this project.

What makes this independent middle school stand apart from the rest? Quite a lot, and the McMullan team was honored to collaborate with Bowie Gridley Architects’ team to create this dynamic learning environment for tomorrow’s leaders.

As Flint Hill states, “On the left side of the building is a two-story, light-filled multi-purpose space called The Commons. It’s where students will eat lunch, hang out with friends and hold Town Meetings (when all Middle School students, faculty and staff meet as a group). On the right side of the building, a ring of light-filled classrooms surrounds the Academic Atrium which features two spacious project areas. There are two large innovation spaces to accommodate the needs and tools of our makers, robotics and computer science courses and facilitate interdisciplinary projects. There are also science labs, a learning center, a spacious art classroom on the second floor and small group meeting spaces. A large terrace runs the entire length of the building with built-in stadium-style seating adjacent to the turf field. During the school day, it will be available as a place to have lunch or hold classes outdoors. There’s also a state-of-the-art playground to give students an outdoor space to burn off some of that adolescent energy and strengthen social connections.”
