VCU Health Community Memorial Replacement Hospital

Situated on 70 acres in rural Virginia, this new 166,700 SF, technologically advanced facility features 70 private rooms, 10 coronary intensive care rooms, and an emergency department. Acclaimed for having the most advanced cardiac care in the region, the hospital has a permanent cardiac catheterization lab along with diagnostic services including MRI, CT, nuclear medicine, cardiac, vascular and pulmonary studies. Structurally significant features include a standalone, vertically cantilevered stone blade wall extending 12 feet horizontally from the building and 14 feet above the roof, bisecting the main entrance canopy. There is also a concrete shear wall designed to resist seismic loading along with utilization of a short aggregate pier soil improvement method in lieu of a deep foundation system. The design for an additional level as well as a MOB connector was also incorporated into the hospital design.
