Washington Union Station Main Hall Renovation
Immediately following the August 2011 earthquake, we conducted a rapid assessment of damage to the station. Cracks in the historic plaster coffered ceiling in the Main Hall and Concourse were found. Since that time, we have worked with a team of architects, plaster artisans, and scaffolding contractors to repair the ceiling. A means of accessing the Main Hall ceiling through use of a movable scaffolding bridge was developed that allowed the station to remain fully operational. Our team devised a scheme to support the scaffolding using the existing Main Hall floor framing to avoid interference with the massive ductwork below it. We also analyzed the existing support systems for the coffered ceilings and designed repairs where necessary. The plaster repairs were completed in time for the Presidential Inauguration. Property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
